Thinking of going global? Increasingly meetings, conventions, and trade shows account for a large percentage of the business travel today. As new business opportunities arise outside of our Canadian borders, the rules of doing business change. The business practices that are exercised in North America are not necessary the same rules that apply elsewhere.
To interact successfully, it’s helpful to adjust to the communication style of the country to which you are interested in growing your business. By learning the international business etiquette rules for the country you are targeting, you will further your chances of concluding a successful bid to do business within that area.
When conducting business abroad you should pay particular attention to the following:
- Names and proper pronunciation of persons with whom you will be meeting
- Titles of persons with whom you will be meeting
- Gestures and habits when speaking
- The way you dress -- for business or social functions
- Regional rituals and business etiquette i.e. gift exchange, arrival time, business hours, currency, transportation availability, export/ import regulations (to name a few)
- Social and entertainment etiquette -- dining times, gift exchange, who pays etc. tipping,
- Address, telephone and contact name of the Canadian Embassy Representative in the country you are visiting
