Find Your Life Purpose
by Bill Ferguson, Author, Speaker & Counselor
Everyone has a particular life expression, or purpose. When you live your purpose, you feel fulfilled. You love what you do and know you make a difference. Your life has meaning and direction. Purpose is the natural expression of who you are. Purpose utilizes all your gifts, your talents and your abilities. You are good at your purpose and you love what you do.
Until you find your life purpose, there will always seem to be something missing.
Unfortunately, finding your purpose is much easier said than done. You can’t go to the library and look up your purpose. You won’t find purpose in the want ads. Purpose is something you create. Purpose is something you bring forth out of your intention, your commitment and determination.
Although you can’t look up purpose, there is a path where purpose can be discovered.
1. The first step in this path is to find your passion.
- What do you love to do?
- What are you naturally good at?
- What turns you on?
- What could you throw your heart and soul into?
- What do you love doing so much, that you would pay for the privilege of doing it?
Another element of life purpose is serving. Your purpose will always involve some form of contribution. It will be a contribution that is important to you. What is the contribution that you want to make to the world?
Do you want to teach people how to love? Do you want to clean up the environment or show people how to have fun? What is the contribution that you want to make?
Once your passion and your contribution are the same, you have found your purpose.
The process of discovering your purpose may take months of active looking, so be
patient. Just keep looking.
2. The next step, after you have found your purpose, is to find a way to live it
full time and still pay the bills. This may seem impossible but it’s not. It can be done. There is a way to live your passion and you can find it.
Constantly ask yourself the question, "How can I earn a living doing what I love?" Keep searching for the answer. Explore every possibility. Turn over every stone and never quit.
Pray for guidance and follow your intuition. Maybe you need to get a different job or go back to school. Keep looking and keep taking the next step.
The process may take years, but once you have the commitment and determination,
you will eventually find the way.
Use the following questions to give yourself more insight into your life purpose. Write down all your thoughts. Keep writing until there is no more response. As you work with the questions, you will discover more about your passion and the contribution that you want to make.
Life purpose questions:
- What are your dreams?
- What do you love to do?
- What makes you come alive?
- What are you good at?
- What are your gifts, your talents and your abilities?
- What were you doing when you were the happiest?
- What aspects or characteristics of you are you the most proud of?
- What have you done that you are proud of?
- When you were young, what did you know you would do when you grew up?
- When you are on your deathbed, what would you regret not having done?
- How would you like the world to be?
- If you could do absolutely anything in your life, without any restriction or
limitation, what would it be?
- If you could make any contribution to the world, what would it be?
- What is your passion?
- What is your contribution?
- What is your purpose?
- Are you willing to make it happen?
Once you find a way to earn a living doing what you love, your life will never be the same. You will get to spend the rest of your life having fun instead of working. By doing what you love and by finding how to serve, you create a life that is fulfilling, a life full of love and joy. The process of finding your purpose may take some diligence, but it will certainly be worth the effort.
